Course Title: Clearing the Air: Understanding the Health Impact of Tobacco, Cannabis and Vaping

Course Description:

This course is designed to equip dental professionals with essential knowledge and practical skills to navigate the complexities of tobacco and cannabis smoking, as well as vaping, and their impact on health. Cigarette smoking remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States, responsible for over 480,000 deaths annually. Although smoking rates have declined, the emergence of new tobacco and nicotine products, as well as marijuana smoking, presents new challenges. Marijuana use for medical and recreational purposes has been legalized in more than 30 states. Patients are more open to discussing cannabis use and might report their use to a dental office.

Participants will gain insights into national smoking trends and demographic variations, with a focus on smoking patterns among different groups, particularly U.S. youth. The course will explore the unique health risks associated with alternative tobacco and nicotine products such as snus and e-cigarettes. It will detail the differences in tobacco exposure among various products and discuss strategies for addressing these differences in tobacco cessation programs. Many smokers switch to e-cigarettes as a harm-reduction option. During this course, participants will discuss e-cigarettes as a potential tobacco cessation product. E-cigarettes will be compared with traditional cigarettes and NRTs. The nicotine content, potential for inducing addiction, and assisting in tobacco cessation will be discussed. The systemic and local effects of ‘vaping’ will be outlined. Participants will discuss the implications of acute and chronic cannabis use on providing routine dental care. They will also identify barriers to chair-side cessation counseling and

discuss evidence-based interventions. Participants will become familiar with the resources for referral to address drug use and addiction. They will also become familiar with the current regulations and future directions of cannabis, tobacco, and nicotine product control in the USA.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

· Recognize national smoking trends and discuss smoking prevalence among various demographic groups and smoking patterns among U.S. youth.

· Discuss the legal status of marijuana use and its prevalence in the USA.

· Analyze differences in tobacco products and their specific health risks.

· Recognize signs of tissue changes due to different tobacco product exposures.

· Recognize the effects of cannabis use on systemic and oral health.

· Analyze the safety, benefits, and disadvantages of e-cigarettes.

· Evaluate harm reduction programs (snus and e-cigs) for smokers who are unwilling to quit.

· Identify barriers to chair-side tobacco cessation interventions and incorporate tobacco cessation into clinical practice.

· Discuss evidence-based interventions and incorporate tobacco cessation into clinical practice.

· Assess the implications of acute and chronic cannabis use on providing routine dental and dental hygiene care.

· List the resources for referral to address tobacco, nicotine, and cannabis addiction.

· Describe the current status and future directions of tobacco and nicotine product control in the USA.
