Dr. John Gallo Selected as Dean of Louisiana State University Health New Orleans School of Dentistry

Louisiana State University Health New Orleans announced on July 1 that John Gallo, III, DDS, MS, previously Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs in the Louisiana State University Health New Orleans School of Dentistry (LSUSD), would become the new Dean of the LSUSD, effective July 1, 2024.

In this transition, Dr. Gallo has replaced Interim Dean Janet Southerland, DDS, MPH, PhD, also Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs for Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, who filled the position starting in September of 2023 while careful consideration was made in selecting a candidate for the permanent position.

Dr. Gallo is a lifelong member of the LSUSD community. A fellow alumnus, he began his journey graduating with the DDS Class of 1992. He later pursued an MS in Health Care Management from the University of New Orleans.

It was not long after that Dr. Gallo returned to the halls of the dental school. In 1996, he accepted an academic appointment in the Department of Operative Dentistry and Biomaterials. Since then, he has accumulated 28 years of service in various positions while also making significant contributions to the field through his research on adhesive dentistry and clinical education. Dr. Gallo has also held many leadership positions of throughout his career. Prior to his appointment as dean, Dr. Gallo served as Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs, a position he had held since 2014.

Throughout his career, Dr. Gallo has been an active member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Dental Association, Louisiana Dental Association, New Orleans Dental Association, the International College of Dentists, the American College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He has served in leadership positions such as Vice President and President of the New Orleans Section of AADR and Chair of the Annual Session Program Committee for ADEA and is a site visitor for the Commission on Dental Accreditation.

As dean, Dr. John Gallo commits to shaping the future of dental education, emphasizing excellence in academics, patient care, and collaboration with the local community. LSUSD is optimistic and welcomes Dr. Gallo in his new position as dean.
